Baseball Edged by Curry
Leopards suffer 6-5 setback to the Colonels; Devon Lapierre ties a program record with four stolen bases while Matthew Favazzo records his 100th career hit

MILTON, Mass. – Devon Lapierre tied a program record with four stolen bases and also recorded three hits while Matthew Favazzo became the 27th player in program history to record 100 career hits, however, the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team was edged by Curry, 6-5, in Conference of New England play Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth nearly struck first in the top of the first inning as Lapierre led off with a single and stole second. With two outs, A.T. DiPina singled which put Lapierre at third. DiPina stole second, however, a groundout ended the inning.
- With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Curry loaded the bases. Nigel Cross got a strikeout to end the threat and the inning, keeping the game scoreless.
- The Leopards broke the ice in the top of the fifth inning. Lapierre led off with a single, stole second, and went to third on a wild pitch. He came in to score when Jake Samela hit a sacrifice fly. The Colonels responded in the home half of the inning, scoring three times, which included a two-run single from Tommy Marshall. Marshall scored two batters later on an RBI double from Erik Leonard.
- Curry threatened to add to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. Alec Peruzzi kept it a 3-1 game when he got an inning-ending strikeout.
- In the top of the seventh, Wentworth cut the lead to 3-2. Mike Sibert led off with a double and went to third when Lapierre reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Samela hit into a fielder's choice which saw Sibert out at the plate and Lapierre go to third. Favazzo reached on a fielder's choice, which drove in Lapierre. However, in the bottom of the inning, George Calderon singled in Kyle Doolin, making it 4-2. Calderon scored on an RBI single from Devin Grove, while Brandon Polanco scored on a passed ball, upping the lead to 6-2.
- The Black & Gold scored three times in the top of the eighth inning to pull within a run. Christian Roncal and Nick Cullinan led off with back-to-back singles and Matt Robinson reaching on an error loaded the bases. Jake Prisco grounded out to score Roncal and put runners at second and third, Sibert singled in Cullinan, and Robinson scored when Sibert was caught in a rundown. Lapierre singled and stole second but a groundout ended the inning.
- With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, Brady Aubuchon got an inning-ending strikeout, keeping it a one-run game. Down to its final at bat, Favazzo led off with a single – his 100th career hit – and after he was out when Roncal reach on a fielder's choice and went to second on an error, a groundout ended the game.
- Nigel Coss took the loss (3-2), allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits and striking out four. In addition to Lapierre's three hits, Favazzo was 2-for-5 with an RBI, Sibert was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and DiPina was 2-for-5.
