WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Trailing 6-0 after five innings of play, the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team battled back but ultimately fell to Waynesburg, 7-6, in non-conference action Tuesday morning.
With the win the Yellowjackets improve to 7-2 on the season while the Leopards fall to 2-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With two outs in the first inning, Waynesburg took a 1-0 lead on an inside the park home run to the deepest part of the field. Wentworth nearly tied it in the top of the second as Matthew Favazzo hit a deep fly ball to left that was determined to leave the park, but the wind knocked it down. Later that inning Josh Turcotte singled, however, a ground out ended the inning.
- With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Waynesburg increased its lead to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly. Tommy Crowley induced an inning-ending double play to keep it a two-run game.
- An inning later the Yellowjackets scored four times to up their lead to 6-0, with two runs coming on an RBI single, another on an RBI single, and the fourth coming on a wild pitch.
- Wentworth got on the board in the seventh inning as Jake Samela drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Turcotte double. Turcotte stole third and scored on an errant throw, making it 6-2. Christian Figueroa laced a triple down the right field line and came around to score on a pinch-hit RBI single from John Golebieski, cutting the lead in half.
- In the bottom of the seventh, the Yellowjackets plated their seventh run on a sacrifice fly, increasing the lead to 7-3.
- The Black & Gold chipped away in the top of the eighth, scoring three times to make it a one-run game. Matt Robinson led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. A ground out moved him to third and a wild pitch scored him. Favazzo drew a walk and after Samela lined out, the throw to try and double Favazzo off was errant, allowing him to go to second. Turcotte delivered a double, which brought Favazzo in. Lukas Poirier walked and both runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Mike Sibert drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Turcotte and making it 7-6.
- Waynesburg threatened to add onto its lead in the bottom of the eighth, opening the inning with a walk and a single. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners up 90 feet, an intentional walk loaded the bases. The move paid off as Jacob DeCoste induced an inning-ending double play, Wentworth's third double play of the game.
- Down to its final half inning, Wentworth was unable to generate any offense, as the Leopards were retired in order.
- In is first collegiate start, Tommy Crowley took the loss (0-1), allowing four runs on five hits and striking out three in 4.1 innings of work. In addition to DeCoste, Brandon Farinas, Tim Vargus, Joseph Sinibaldi, Ethan Jason, and Jack Titley each saw action on the mound.
- Turcotte continued his hot start, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Figueroa also had a pair of hits.
