Baseball Holds on to Defeat Emerson
Matt Robinson and Matthew Favazzo each record four hits with Robinson tying a program record with three doubles; Mike Sibert ties a program record with four stolen bases while Alec Peruzzi improves to 3-0 and Bennett Leary locks down his fourth save
NORTHBORO, Mass. – Matt Robinson went 4-for-5 with a program record-tying three doubles and Matthew Favazzo also went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team held on to defeat Emerson, 12-9, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.
In addition to Robinson tying the program record for doubles in a game, Mike Sibert tied the program record with four stolen bases.
With the win the Leopards improve to 7-6 on the season while the Lions fall to 2-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Mike Sibert led off with a walk and stole second. With one out, he stole third and scored on a Nick Cullinan single. Cullinan advanced to second and third on passed balls, and, after Matt Robinson walked and stole second, scored on a wild pitch.
- An inning later the Leopards doubled their lead to 4-0. Jake Samela led off with a walk and went to second when Caleb Cormier was hit by a pitch. Both players moved up on stolen bases and Samela scored on a wild pitch, which advanced Cormier to third. Cormier scored on an RBI single from Sibert.
- A one-out double from Matt Robinson in the fifth set the stage for Josh Turcotte to hit his first home run of the season and up the lead to 6-0. Matthew Favazzo increased the lead to 7-0 when he belted his first home run of the season. Wentworth loaded the bases with two outs and Samela scored on a passed ball, giving the Black & Gold an 8-0 lead through four and a half.
- With one out in the sixth, Robinson hit a double and went to third on a Turcotte single. Robinson scored when Favazzo doubled and Favazzo came around to score when Samela reached on an error giving the Leopards a 10-0 lead.
- Emerson threatened in the bottom of the sixth, putting the first two runners on by way of an error and a hit by pitch. Alec Peruzzi induced a double play and a fly out, ending the threat. An inning later the Lions broke the shutout, using a two-run home run to get on the scoreboard and added a one-out double to make it 10-3. A two-run single cut the lead to 10-5 after seven innings.
- Robinson led off the eighth with his game record-tying third double and, with one out scored on a Favazzo double. Samela followed with a walk and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Cormier followed with a walk and on a wild pitch, Favazzo scored while Samela went to third, making it 12-5 after seven and a half.
- With one out in the eighth, the Lions got a ground-rule double and had runners on first and second with two outs. An infield single cut the lead to 12-6.
- Things got interesting in the ninth as Emerson got a leadoff double and two consecutive groundouts brought home a run. A pair of walks around a single loaded the bases and the hosts got a pair of bases-loaded walks to pull within three at 12-9. Bennett Leary got a lineout to end the game.
- In addition to Robinson and Favazzo recording four hits apiece, Turcotte and Nick Cullinan had a pair of hits in the win.
- Peruzzi improved to 3-0 on the season, throwing six shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five. Leary notched his fourth save of the season. Christian Roncal, Ethan Purcell, Joseph Sinibaldi, and Tommy Crowley also saw action on the bump. Sinibaldi had a pair of strikeouts.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was the fourth all-time meeting between the two teams.
