MEDFORD, Mass. – Josh Turcotte went 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs, two runs scored, and five RBI as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team upped its win streak to three with a 7-6 win over Brandeis.
With the win the Leopards improve to 8-6 on the year while the Judges fall to 7-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth put up three in the top of the first, with two of the three coming on a home run from Josh Turcotte. Mike Sibert led off the game with a single and went to third on a Lukas Poirier single. Nick Cullinan followed with a ground out which moved Poirier to second and he went to third when Matt Robinson flied out, setting the stage for Turcotte's second home run of the season, and upping the lead to 3-0.
- A leadoff single and a walk put runners on first and second for Brandeis in the home half of the inning. After a double play, an RBI double made it 2-1.
- The Judges cut the lead to 3-2 in the second inning as the hosts got a leadoff double, who moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single. Brandeis had runners on second and third with one out, however, Cooper Smith got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
- Sibert led off the third with a double and went to third on a Cullinan ground out. Robinson singled in Sibert to make it 4-2 and went to third on a Turcotte double. In the home half of the inning, the Judges had an RBI infield single to cut the lead to 4-3.
- Using three runs in the fourth inning, Brandies took a 6-4 lead, thanks in part to a two-run single with two outs.
- Wentworth reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning as Turcotte blasted his second homer of the game. Cullinan got hit by a pitch with one out and went to second on a Robinson single. Turcotte followed with a three-run home run, making it 7-6. The Judges got a leadoff double in the bottom of the inning and had runners at first and second with two outs, however, Chase Carder got a groundout that ended the threat.
- Both teams had chances to score in the seventh. Turcotte had a one-out single and went to second on a Matthew Favazzo walk. Jake Samela grounded out, moving both runners up but the threat ended with a strikeout. In the home half of the inning, Brandeis had a one-out single but was erased by a double play.
- Sibert drew a one-out walk in the top of the eighth and stole second. Poirier walked and both runners stole to move up 90 feet apiece. However, a ground out and a strikeout left both runners in scoring position.
- Bennett Leary came on in the ninth for the Black & Gold and walked the leadoff batter, who went to second on a sacrifice bunt. He proceeded to get a fly out and a ground out to lock down his fifth save of the season.
- Carder picked up the win (2-0) as he pitched a scoreless fifth. Cooper Smith started for Wentworth, pitching the first two innings. Michael Archambault, Tommy Crowley, and Nigel Cross also saw action on the mound for the Leopards.
- Sibert was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two stolen bases. Robinson also had a pair of hits on the day.
