Alec Peruzzi threw 7.0 innings with 7 strikeouts; Caleb Cormier goes 3-3 as the Black & Gold pick up a big conference win

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team picked up a big conference win over the Suffolk Rams behind big performances from Alec Peruzzi and Clabe Cormier. Peruzzi improved to 5-0 this season after throwing 7.0 frames with seven strikeouts while Cormier went 3-3 at the plate with five RBI. Josh Turcotte went 3-4 and Christian Roncal added two runs, a triple, and one RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wentworth took the lead in the bottom of the second after Roncal drew a walk to bring in Robinson for the game's opening run. Cormier followed with a single to center to score Favazzo and Turcotte, pushing the lead to 3-0. Cormier was caught stealing, but Roncal scored on the pick off to make it 4-0 Wentworth.
- Peruzzi struck out the side in the top of the third to bring his total to five on the afternoon. The Leopards went down in order in the bottom half of the frame before the Rams tallied a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to make it 4-2 game.
- Roncal tripled down the right field line in the bottom of the fourth but was left stranded as the game moved to the fifth. Neither side scored in the fifth and Peruzzi threw a scoreless sixth to bring the Leopards' offense back to the plate. Wentworth could not add to the lead and the game moved to the seventh.
- Peruzzi continued to pitch well, striking out another batter in the top of the seventh to bring his total to seven. Wentworth pushed the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the frame after Turcotte's ground-rule double brought in Robinson.
- Archer followed with an RBI single to bring in Turcotte to give the Leopards a 6-2 edge. Cormier doubled to right field to clear the bases and stretch Wentworth's advantage to 9-2 after seven innings.
- The Rams cut the lead in the eighth inning after Mike Mullany reached first on a throwing error as Sebastian Lampert came in to score. Vasili Scangas doubled to left center to score Mullaney and made it 9-5 heading into the bottom half of the frame.
- Bennet Leary got out of the inning with the lead and the Leopards went down in order in the bottom half of the inning as the game moved to the final frame. Leary threw a 1-2-3 inning to secure the victory for the Leopards.
THE SERIES
- Today was the 28th all-time meeting between the teams.
