WEYMOUTH, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team fell to the #19 Endicott Gulls in both games of the Saturday doubleheader. Between the games, the Leopards celebrated their senior class with a senior day ceremony.
GAME 1: #19 Endicott 16, Wentworth 1
Nick Cullinan went 2-3 while Christian Roncal went 1-3 with one run. Josh Turcotte added one hit in three at bats. Alec Peruzzi threw 5.0 innings and struck out four hitters. Jace Rogers threw 0.1 inning and struck out one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Gulls took the lead in second inning behind AJ Hamm's three-run home run to left field. The Leopards got one back in the fourth inning after Robinson's groundout scored Roncal to make it a 3-1 game.
- Brady Rickenbach brought in a run for Endicott in the fifth to push the lead to 4-1. The Gulls tacked on three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take control of the game with a 7-1 lead. The Gulls' offense continued to bring in runs, stretching the lead to 13-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
- Endicott scored three runs in the seventh inning to stretch the lead to 16-1 and take game one of the doubleheader.
GAME 2: #19 Endicott 14, Wentworth 4
Mike Sibert went 2-3 with one run while Nick Cullinan and Matt Robinson each tallied one hit and one run. Roncal went 1-2 with one RBI and Cyle Archer recorded one hit and one run. Nigel Cross fell to 2-5 this season after 4.0 innings with four strikeouts. Aaron Masson went 1.0 inning with two strikeouts and Bennett Leary threw 0.2 inning with two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Gulls took the lead in the second inning after James Benestad's RBI single to left field. Hamm followed with a double to left field, scoring another run to make it 2-0. A double from Trevor Kamuda brought in two more runs to give Endicott a 4-0 lead.
- Endicott tacked on one run in the fourth and in the sixth to make it a 6-0 game. Robinson's double down the left field line got Wentworth on the board and cut the lead to 6-1.
- Turcotte doubled to left to bring in two runs and the Leopards cut the lead to 6-3 through six innings. Crowley recorded a strikeout in a scoreless seventh to bring the Leopards' offense back to the plate.
- Roncal's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame made it a 6-4 game through seven innings. TJ Liponis hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Gulls in front 9-4. Endicott tacked on five more runs to win the game 14-4.
THE SERIES
- Today was the 63rd and 64th all-time meeting between the teams.
