Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Roger Williams
The Leopards fell in both games in Rhode Island
BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team fell to the Roger Williams Hawks in Saturday's doubleheader. The Hawks took game one 8-6 before securing the sweep with a 7-6 win in game two.
GAME 1: Roger Williams 8, Wentworth 6
Nick Cullinan went 3-5 with three RBI and one run to lead the offense. Lukas Poirier went 2-4 with one run while Caleb Cormier and Matthew Favazzo each tallied one RBI. Alec Peruzzi threw 7.0 innings with four strikeouts and four earned runs. Tommy Crowley struck out one in 0.2 inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wentworth opened the scoring in the second inning with Poirier scoring from an error to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead. Cullinan followed with a double to right center that cleared the bases, pushing Wentworth's advantage to 4-0 through two innings.
- Sam Arcieri's sacrifice fly in the third inning got the Hawks on the board, cutting the lead to 4-1. Another sacrifice fly from Roger Williams made it a 4-2 game after three frames.
- Roger Williams tacked on a third run in the fourth inning after Casey DeLorenzo's RBI single. A double from Will Florio scored DeLorenzo, tying the game 4-4 through four innings.
- Cormier's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning restored Wentworth's lead, now 5-4 after six frames. Peruzzi recorded a strikeout in the bottom of the sixth to keep Wentworth in front.
- Favazzo's sacrifice fly in the seventh scored Cullinan, giving the Leopards a two-run advantage. Roger Williams jumped in front in the bottom of the eighth inning behind Sam Arcieri's grand slam. The Leopards could not get back into the game and fell 8-6 in game one.
GAME 2: Roger Williams 7, Wentworth 6
Matt Robinson went 3-5 with two runs and two RBI while Matthew Favazzo went 3-5 with two RBI. Josh Turcotte tallied three hits, and Cyle Archer had two hits, one run, and one RBI. Nigel Cross threw 6.2 innings with eight strikeouts and Cooper Smith fell to 0-1 this season after 0.2 inning and one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Favazzo's RBI single in the first inning gave the Leopards an early 1-0 lead in game two. The Hawks answered in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI from Braden Ventura tying the game 1-1.
- Favazzo came up big again in the third with a double to right field to bring in Robinson and give Wentworth a 2-1 lead. The Hawks answered in the bottom half of the inning with Jack Tubman's single up the middle bringing in Braden Ventura to tie the game 2-2.
- Archer gave the Leopards the lead in the sixth with an RBI single that scored Cormier. Roger Williams answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI isngle from Florio, tying the game 3-3.
- The Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning after Jack Tubman singled through the left side to score two runs, giving Roger Williams a 5-3 lead late in the game.
- Robinson's double to left center to score two runs to tie the game 5-5. Cullinan followed with a double to right field, bringing in Robinson and giving the Leopards a 6-5 lead. A sacrifice fly from Noah Hester tied the game 6-6 through eight innings.
- The Hawks walked it off in the bottom of the ninth inning with Rory Lynch's RBI single bringing in the winning run, giving Roger Williams the sweep.
THE SERIES
- Today was the 76th and 77th all-time meeting between the teams.
