Baseball Outlasts Bridgewater State
The Leopards held off a late surge from the Bears to win a thrilling midweek matchup, scoring 19 runs on 21 hits
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team took down the Bridgewater State Bears in a back-and-forth thriller at Alumni Park. The Leopards' offense explodes with 19 runs on 21 hits to take down the Bears.
Christian Roncal went 4-4 with three runs and three RBI while Cyle Archer went 4-7 with four runs and four RBI. Matt Robinson and Nick Cullinan added three hits apiece and combined for four RBI while Matthew Favazzo and Josh Turcotte combined for four hits and three RBI.
Michael Archambault threw 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. Jacob DeCoste improved to 1-1 this season after 2.0 innings with one earned run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cullinan got Wentworth on the board in the first inning with a single up the middle scoring Archer to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead. After a walk loaded the bases, Turcotte singled up the middle to bring in Robinson and double Wentworth's lead. Roncal's sacrifice fly and an infield single from Sibert gave the Leopards a 4-0 advantage.
- Archambault recorded one strikeout in back-to-back scoreless innings to keep the Leopards in front. Archer brought in two runs in the third inning with a single to center field, stretching the lead to 6-0.
- The Bears got on the board in the bottom of the third behind Ryan Flaherty's RBI single. Benjamin Sepeck's double to left field scored another run and Bridgewater State cut the lead to 6-2 through three innings.
- Bridgewater State kept crawling back into the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth and adding another in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead.
- Wentworth responded in the sixth with Favazzo bringing in Robinson to tie the game. The Leopards' offense found a rhythm in the seventh inning, scoring six runs on four hits to take a 13-7 lead. Cormier, Cullinan, and Roncal tallied hits to give Wentworth the lead.
- Rylan Secovich's triple in the bottom of the seventh scored another run to cut the lead to five. Robinson's sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth restored Wentworth's six-run lead.
- Wentworth added to the lead in the ninth inning with Cormier's sacrifice fly scoring Turcotte. Archer followed with an infield single to bring in Poirier before Robinson's double scored Archer. Favazzo hit a single to left to bring in Robinson and give Wentworth a 19-8 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
- Joshua Selander's double brought in one run before Sepeck's double scored two as the Bears cut the lead to eight runs. Jamie Luna's single to left center scored another run to make it 19-12. Titley got the final out and the Leopards came away with a big win over Bridgewater State.
