Western New England Downs Baseball in CNE First Round
The Leopards’ season comes to an end after falling to WNE in the first round of the conference tournament
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The #6 Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team fell to the #3 Western New England Golden Bears in the Conference of New England first round game on Tuesday afternoon. Nick Cullinan went 3-4 with one run while Christian Roncal went 2-5 with two RBI. Matt Robinson added two hits and one RBI, and Mike Sibert went 2-4 with one run and one RBI. Alec Peruzzi falls to 6-2 this season after 4.0 innings and two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Golden Bears took an early lead behind Ryan Montini's RBI double. Leo Paragarino hit a single up the middle to double the lead before Connor Cowern's double to left scored two and made it 4-0.
- The Leopards' offense could not get going as the game moved to the fourth inning. Western New England added to their lead with Tyler Kornacki's single scoring two runs. A sacrifice fly and RBI single gave the Golden Bears an 8-0 lead through four innings.
- Wentworth had two runners on in the fifth inning, but a double play ended the frame with Western New England still in control. The Golden Bears tacked on a run in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to lead 13-0. Montini's RBI single pushed the lead to 14-0 through six.
- The Golden Bears tacked on a run in the eighth to lead 15-0. The Leopards got on the board in the top of the ninth with two outs after Sibert's RBI single scored Cormier. Samela followed with a double to left to bring in Sibert before Robinson's RBI single made it a 15-3 game.
- Favazzo hit an RBI single and a muffed throw by the Golden Bears allowed another run to score as the Leopards made it 15-5. Roncal's single up the middle scored two runs to make it 15-7. Wentworth fought to get back into the game but ultimately fell to the Golden Bears.
