Chornyei Named Head Men's Basketball Coach
Jason Chornyei, who served the previous four seasons as an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Stevens Institute of Technology, has been named the fifth head coach in the program's NCAA history
BOSTON, Mass. – Jason Chornyei, who served as an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Stevens Institute of Technology the last four seasons, has been named the Head Men's Coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology. Director of Athletics Cheryl Aaron made the announcement.
"We are extremely excited that Jason has accepted our offer and is joining the Wentworth community as our new head men's basketball coach," said Aaron. "Jason's experience and success at Stevens distinguished him from a very strong pool of candidates. His experience at Stevens as the offensive coordinator and directing all recruiting to a specialized institution like Wentworth makes him an excellent fit for our program."
In his four years on the Ducks' staff, Chornyei helped Stevens to a 71-37 record, making the Middle Athletic Conference Freedom Tournament in each of those years. Stevens won the conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2022 (second round) and 2024 (first round). This past season the Ducks posted a 19-8 record and were the MAC Freedom runner-up.
Chornyei served as Stevens' offensive coordinator, where he implemented an offense that scored 75.4 points per game this past season, which ranked first among MAC Freedom schools. As the Ducks' recruiting coordinator, he led the program's efforts to attract highly academic student-athletes on a national scale. His efforts paid off with one of the highlights being coaching Jack Spellman, a three-time MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Year and a 2025 Josten's Trophy Finalist. Spellman is one of only seven known players to eclipse 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 300 blocked shots. Stevens' 2023 recruiting class featured three student-athletes who were starters this past season as sophomores, including one who led the conference in both scoring and assists. This class also produced the 2024 MAC Freedom Rookie of the Year and the Most Valuable Player of the 2024 MAC Freedom Tournament as a first-year player.
In addition to his duties as the offensive coordinator and coordinator, he produced and led presentations for opponent scouting reports, including film sessions and on-court presentations, trained and oversaw scouting duties for part-time assistant coaches, managed a national recruiting schedule for off-campus events, and played a vital role in fundraising efforts, community service initiatives, and planned alumni events.
Prior to joining the staff at Stevens, Chornyei spent the 2020-2021 season at Muhlenberg College where he assisted in managing the program during a season that had strict restrictions and no competitions due to COVID-19. During this time he successfully recruited five student-athletes, three of whom eventually became starters for the Mules.
Chornyei spent four seasons (2016-2020) as an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at his alma mater, Drew University, where he helped the Rangers reach the Landmark Conference Tournament in his last three seasons. Drew had a breakout season during the 2018-2019 season, setting a program record for wins with 23 (23-7), earning the program's first regular-season title and conference tournament victory. The Rangers were runner-up in the conference tournament that season , in addition to reaching the semifinal round in 2018 and 2020. While at Drew, his duties included assisting in all areas of the program, with a focus on recruiting, scouting, budget management, and fundraising. His recruiting efforts paid off as Riley Collins, who is now on the University of Tennessee men's basketball coaching staff as an assistant director of player development, was a two-time Landmark Conference Player of the Year, a Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year, and an All-American. He also coached a two-time Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Year, an additional defensive player of the year, and an additional rookie of the year. He also gained administrative experience while at Drew, serving as the Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations for two years.
As a student-athlete, Chornyei played three seasons at Drew University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business in 2014 and went on to earn his Master’s degree in Sport Management from Indiana State in 2016. While at Indiana State, he was a Graduate Assistant for Facilities and Event Operations.
"I would like to thank Cheryl Aaron, (Vice President for Student Affairs) Courtney McKenna, and the entire search committee for entrusting me with the men's basketball program at Wentworth," said Chornyei. "My family and I are thrilled to be joining the Leopard community. I am looking forward to working with the student-athletes and can't wait to get started!"
Chornyei, the fifth head coach in the program's NCAA history (1985-present), inherits a Leopard squad that advanced to the conference tournament for the 19th consecutive season in 2024-25. After a slow start, Wentworth used a stretch of eight wins in 11 contests in January and early February to earn the number six seed in the Conference of New England Tournament.
