Roger Williams Rallies Past Hockey
Hawks erase a 4-0 deficit and defeat the Leopards in overtime, 5-4; four student-athletes recorded goals for Wentworth, including Nolan Pecora who scored his first collegiate marker
FALL RIVER, Mass. – Daxton St. Hilaire score at 2:39 of overtime to lift the Roger Williams University hockey team to a 5-4 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Conference of New England play on Saturday. St. Hilaire's goal capped of a five-goal comeback for the Hawks, who trailed, 4-0, after two periods of play.
With the win Roger Williams improves to 2-5-0 overall and 1-5 in conference play while the Leopards fall to 2-5-1 (2-4).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A back and forth start to the game saw both teams with scoring chances, however, just like the first game of the series, both netminders stood tall, keeping the game tied at 0-0. Midway through the period, Wentworth had a 5-on-3 advantage, however, were unable to capitalize.
- On their third power play of the period, the Leopards jumped on the board as Nikolas Sombrowski scored from George Kolovos and Nolan Lowe. After Sombrowski won the faceoff to Lowe, Kolovos took a shot that was saved and Sombrowski cleaned up the rebound for his second goal of the season.
- Scoring three times in a span of 5:29 late in the second period, the Black & Gold took a commanding, 4-0 lead. At 14:28, Seth Robinson set up Nolan Pecora for his first collegiate marker, while 62 seconds later, Xavier Vaillancourt scored from Jesse Chamberlain. Desmond Johnson and Mighton Johnson helped on the fourth goal as, with three seconds left in the period, Nicholas Ramm notched his first of the season.
- At 9:10 of the third period, TJ Sullivan put home a rebound on the power play to make it 4-1. Roger Williams tacked on another power-play goal, trimming the lead to 4-2 at the 12:48 mark on a goal from Nicholas Rooney. Just 37 seconds later, Roger Williams pulled within a goal on a marker from Tommy Rose.
- With 1:25 left in the third period, the Hawks pulled Jacob Jaslow for an extra attacker. Just 15 seconds later, the move paid off as Sullivan and St. Hilaire set up JJ Alger for the game-tying goal. The hosts had one last chance as time wound down in the game, however, Sombrowski blocked a shot which sent the game into overtime.
- Jack McGovern made a save early in the extra frame, which resulted in a faceoff that was won by Ramm. A shot attempt went wide, which eventually gave possession to Roger Williams. Tyler Branish and Christian Worrell set up St. Hilaire on the game winner.
- McGovern made 34 saves on the night.
