Hockey Rallies Past Southern Maine
Leopards get back int he win column as Nicholas Ramm and Xavier each score two goals in a 5-4 win; Jack McGovern eclipsed the 2,000-save mark for his career
GORHAM, Maine. – Nicholas Ramm's goal at the 10:44 mark of the third period capped off a three-goal comeback as the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team rallied to defeat the University of Southern Maine, 5-4, in a non-conference contest.
Ramm and Xavier Vaillancourt each finished the contest with a pair of goals, while Jack McGovern became the third goalie in Leopard program history to eclipse the 2,000-save mark.
With the win Wentworth improves to 3-6-1 while the Huskies fall to 4-3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Using two goals in a span of 58 seconds, Wentworth took a 2-0 lead. At the 4:09 mark, Ramm scored from Danny Phelan and Ethan Lim, while Vaillancourt scored from George Kolovos and Nick Bosch at 5:07.
- Southern Maine tied the game with a pair of goals coming two minutes apart, Southern Maine tied the game at 2-all. Kayde Kinsaschuk (12:02) and Conor Donovan (13:22) provided the offense for the Huskies.
- A back-and-forth second period led to numerous scoring chances for both teams, however, neither were able to find the back of the net until the 12:26 mark when Southern Maine's Jordan Bezio gave the hosts a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal. McGovern made a save late in the period to keep it a one-goal game.
- Just 20 seconds into the third period, the Huskies increased their lead to 4-2. Vaillancourt nearly brought the Black & Gold back to within one when his shot 27 seconds later hit the post and he had a shot on goal denied 34 seconds later.
- At 3:03, Vaillancourt found the back on the net on the power play as he scored from Nolan Lowe and Cade Penney. Lowe tied the contest at the 5:47 mark when he scored off a feed from Seth Robinson.
- With 29 seconds left on a man advantage, the Leopards went ahead 5-4 when Ian Worthley and Danny Phelan set up Ramm.
- Southern Maine applied pressure on the Leopards, with McGovern making three saves before the Huskies pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. Ramm blocked a shot and McGovern made a save late to preserve the win.
- McGovern's 24 saves puts him at 2,012 for his career as he sits in third place on the program's all-time save list.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was fifth all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth has won two of the last three, both coming by a single goal.
