BURRILVILLE, R.I. – Nolan Lowe's goal just 49 seconds into overtime capped off a wild comeback by the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team as the Leopards defeated Nichols, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Leopards improve to 4-9-1 overall and 3-7 in Conference of New England play, while the Bison fall to 7-7-0 (4-5).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The two teams combined for 48 shot attempts during the opening 20 minutes, with 26 going on target. In a span of 2:31, Wentworth had seven of those attempts, including a flurry of activity when Xavier Vaillancourt and Hunter Wilson each put shots on net. Nichols countered with its own flurry of activity at the midway point of the period with Jack McGovern making four saves in a span of 92 seconds.
- Wentworth had a man advantage with five minutes left in the period and three shots on goal which were saved by Bison netminder Ryan Henry. With 2:01 left in the period, the Bison went on the power play and took a 1-0 lead at 18:55 when Aaron Hamel put home a rebound of a Jeremy Tremblay shot that was saved by McGovern. Wentworth had a 14-12 shot advantage in the period.
- At the 3:50 mark of the second period, Nichols' CJ Zezima gave the Bison a 2-0 lead when he notched a power-play goal. In a 32-second span in the early stage of the period, McGovern made three consecutive saves to keep it a 2-0 game. In total, McGovern made 13 saves in the period as Nichols had a 14-6 shot advantage.
- Wentworth applied pressure at the start of the third period, which included back-to-back shots on goal from Cole Paredes. At the 7:03 mark, the Leopards got on the board as Jake Hines scored his first collegiate marker. With the Bison skating in, Nolan Pecora put a hit on a Nichols forward, freeing the puck up. Seth Robinson collected the puck and fed Hines, who skated through the defense, and buried the shot to the upper right corner.
- With 1:54 left in the period, McGovern was pulled for an extra attacker, and, with 28 seconds left, the move paid off as Mighton Johnson scored to even the game. Robinson played the puck out of the corner to Dane Probe, who was just to the left of the crease. Probe tapped the puck to Mighton Johnson, who notched his second of the season.
- After Nichols won the opening faceoff in the extra frame, Wentworth gained the puck where Lowe put a shot on net 18 seconds into the period. Nichols gained possession after a Wentworth faceoff win, however, Desmond Johnson corralled the puck behind the net and sent a pass to Ian Worthley, who skated through center ice and into the offensive zone. Lowe was trailing along the left side, where Worthley fed a pass to him for the game winner.
- McGovern made 28 saves on the day as Wentworth had a 31-30 shot advantage.
