Hockey Shuts Out Johnson & Wales
Three different players score goals, Desmond Johnson assists on two goals, and Jack McGovern earns his second shutout of the season in a 3-0 win
PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Three different student-athletes scored goals, Desmond Johnson had a pair of assists, and Jack McGovern recorded his second shutout of the season as the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team defeated Johnson & Wales, 3-0, in Conference of New England action Friday night.
With the win the Leopards improve to 5-14-1 overall and 4-11 in CNE play while the Wildcats fall to 6-12-1 (4-10).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- While the first period yielded no goals for either side, Johnson & Wales had a pair of shots on a power play that McGovern came up with saves on. Shots were even at 8-all through the first 20 minutes of action.
- Wentworth had its first power-play attempt of the contest early in the second period with the Leopards putting one shot on goal and had a pair of shots blocked during the man advantage. At the 9:54 mark of the period, Seth Robinson netted his second of the season off an assist from Jake Hines. Wentworth had a 15-5 shot advantage in the second period.
- Johnson helped the Leopards increase their lead to 2-0 as he and Nikolas Sombrowski set up George Kolovos' fifth marker of the season, which came on the power play, at 7:11 of the third period.
- The Wildcats nearly got on the board while on the power play as Connor Nelson hit the post and McGovern made a save later in the shorthanded situation.
- With 2:43 left in the contest, Johnson added his second helper of the night when he set up Nolan Lowe for his third goal of the season.
- Johnson & Wales pulled its goalie with 1:39 left in the contest and had three shots on goal during the extra attacker situation that McGovern made saves on to secure the shutout.
- McGovern made 21 saves on the evening as Wentworth had a 33-21 shot advantage. The Leopards had a 37-23 advantage in the faceoff circle with Ian Worthley winning 11 draws.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was the 40th all-time meeting between the two teams. Winners of five of the last six series meetings, Wentworth holds a 28-9-3 series record. The Leopards are 7-0 in the last seven series contests on the road.
