Strong Second Half Lifts Wentworth to 2-0 Win
Wentworth scores twice in less than 10 minutes to claim second straight win
BOSTON, Mass. – A pair of second-half goals scored less than 10 minutes apart lifted the Wentworth men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over the University of New England in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Sweeney Field.
The host Leopards would control play for a good portion of the first half and would hold an 8-6 advantage in shots but could not capitalize, sending the game to intermission scoreless.
Wentworth's pressure continued when the second half commenced and had a pair of scoring chances early, but could not break the stalemate. At the 53:25 mark a handball violation was called inside the box giving the Leopards a penalty kick. Sophomore midfielder Josh Deschene (Webster, Mass.) took the kick and buried it to the right side to give Wentworth a 1-0 lead. The goal was Deschene's fifth of the season, with three coming on penalty kicks (on three attempts).
The Leopards went ahead 2-0 with 26:47 to play when junior forward John Golden (Whitman, Mass.) blasted a shot from the top of the box that found the upper left corner of the net.
Junior Brian Pearsall (Sanford, Maine) made four saves to record his first shutout of the season. Nor'Easter junior Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine) made seven saves in the loss. Wentworth held a 23-11 shot advantage on the day, including outshooting UNE 15-5 in the second half.
With the win Wentworth improves to 7-6 overall and 6-4 in TCCC play. Winners of two straight, the Leopards travel to Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The Nor'Easters, who saw their two-game win streak snapped, fall to 9-5 (6-4 TCCC) and are also in action on Tuesday, hosting Roger Williams at 6:30 p.m.
