BOSTON, Mass. – Senior midfielder Josh Deschene's (Webster, Mass.) goal with 21:23 left in regulation knotted the game at 1-all and neither team would be able to break the tie as Wentworth and Roger Williams played to a 1-1 draw in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played on Sweeney Feld.
The Hawks, ranked sixth in New England, wasted little time drawing first blood, scoring just 26 seconds into the contest when sophomore forward Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine) fed a pass to classmate Daniel Caruso on the left side of the box. Caruso rifled a shot that found the inside of the right post.
Roger Williams had a chance to increase its lead to 2-0 midway through the half; however a goal was called back due to an offsides call. Wentworth held an 11-6 shot advantage through the first 45:00, including a 4-3 shot on goal advantage.
Both teams had chances in the early going of the second stanza but could not convert. In the 69th minute, Wentworth had a corner kick from the right arc. Senior midfielder John Geleski (Wayne, N.J.) served it into the box where junior forward Mike Birecki (Andover, Mass.) would eventually pick up the loose ball. He fired a shot that was saved by junior keeper Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.), resulting in a rebound. Deschene controlled the rebound and would tie the game.
The Hawks had a golden opportunity in the 79th minute when Caruso went in on a breakaway, only to be stopped by junior John Longo (Needham, Mass.). Wentworth continued to apply pressure late in regulation, forcing three shots, including one the was tipped wide by a defender as time expired.
In the first overtime both teams put a shot on goal, but Longo and Pelloso both made saves to extend the game.
The second extra session was evenly played, however Wentworth had the lone shot on goal.
Longo made eight saves, while Pelloso turned back seven shots. The Leopards had a 29-17 shot advantage, while the Hawks won the battle of shots on goal, 9-8.
Wentworth, at 6-4-3 (3-2-2) travels to Endicott on Wednesday. That same day, Roger Williams (9-2-4, 3-1-3) is at Salve Regina.
