BABSON PARK, Mass. – The 18th-ranked Babson College men's soccer team scored all five of its goals in the opening half as the Beavers defeated the visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards, 5-0, in the season opener for both teams at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Friday afternoon.
Babson wasted little time in netting its first marker of the season, as freshman Telvin Lopes (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored his first collegiate goal with a nifty header inside the far right post off a cross from senior Salo Guindi (Mexico City, Mexico) at 6:37. The Beavers then struck again at the 20-minute mark, when Guindi headed a cross from junior Mike Fisher (Longmeadow, Mass.) over the outstretched arms of Wentworth goalie John Longo (Needham, Mass.) and into the upper left corner for a 2-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Fisher picked up a goal when he took a short pass from junior Kevin Israel (Lafayette, Pa.) and blasted a 15-yard shot inside the right post at 30:18. Senior All-American Eric Anderson (Scituate, Mass.) later made it 4-0 when he netted his first of the season off a Dillon Ventura (Pittstown, N.J.) breakaway feed at 34:51, and a Wentworth own-goal off a long throw-in by sophomore Shawn Citro (Oakland, N.J.) gave the hosts a commanding 5-0 lead heading into the intermission.
Junior Jackson Klein (Maplewood, N.J.) started in net for Babson and needed to make just one save to earn his second career victory and first shutout. His only stop was a fantastic denial that came with nine minutes left in the contest, as he tipped a bending shot from sophomore Adam Rhodes (Litchfield, Conn.) over the crossbar off a restart from just outside the box.
Longo played the first half in goal for the Leopards, finishing with three saves, while junior Cody Gibb (Foster, R.I.) went the final 45 minutes and made two stops.
