Martins Named All-Commonwealth Coast Conference
Sophomore defender Sam Martins earns Honorable Mention All-CCC accolades
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Student-athletes from all 10 member institutions in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) were represented on the 2013 All-CCC Men's Soccer Team. In addition to the all-conference team, six major individual award winners and the team sportsmanship award winner were also selected.
Roger Williams University senior Trevor Hoxsie and Gordon College senior Andrew Vandervoort share CCC Offensive Player of the Year recognition. This is the second time that both of these athletes have been selected for this award, as Hoxsie was honored in 2012 and Vandervoort was honored in 2011. Western New England University senior Kevin Parma was chosen as the CCC Defensive Player of the Year. Gordon freshman Caleb Cole was awarded CCC Rookie of the Year, while senior teammate Trevor Hinshaw was honored as the CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and the Fighting Scots' Derek Potteiger earned CCC Coach of the Year. Eastern Nazarene College was the recipient of the Team Sportsmanship Award.
Voting for the All-CCC team and each of the major awards was conducted among CCC men's soccer coaches.
Wentworth Institute of Technology sophomore defender Sam Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) was named Honorable Mention All-CCC.
Martins had started all 17 games to date for the Leopards, and while he has been a solid defender for a team that has held its opponents to one or fewer goals on five occasions, he is also tied for the team lead in scoring with seven points, coming on two goals and a team-high three assists. One of his assists came on the game-winning goal in a 3-1 upset win over regionally ranked Roger Williams on September 14. He notched his first collegiate goal in a 3-0 win over Curry and also scored in a 3-2 loss at Western New England.
Under first-year head coach Connor Erickson, Wentworth sits at 2-14-1 overall and will be the number eight seed in the upcoming CCC Men's Soccer Tournament, which begins Saturday. The Leopards will travel to top-seeded and 11th-ranked Gordon for an 11:00 a.m. quarterfinal.
