Men's Tennis Swept at Eastern Nazarene
Host Lions send Leopards to second stright loss with a 9-0 conference win
QUINCY, Mass. - Eastern Nazarene men's tennis earned its sixth shutout victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Wentworth, 9-0 on ENC's courts.
Doubles play was a quick affair, as the Lions' duos swept the Leopards' pairs to earn three points. At No. 1 doubles, Austin Steelman and Brandon Lum earned a point for ENC, defeating WIT's Juan Rodriguez and Nate Gove, 8-1. Sam Son and Sam McKay-Corkum dispatched Joe Centola and Matt Levine 8-0 at number two, and the duo of Eric Johnson and Nick Thompson followed suit, sweeping Jia Lee and Andy Chen 8-0, as well.
Singles play saw a tight match at No. 1 where Steelman took on Rodriguez. Steelman eventually edged his opponent in a close first set at 7-5, and built on momentum to take the second set 6-2 to tally a point for the Lions.
Lum pulled through for ENC in second singles, stopping Nate Gove 6-3, 6-1. Sam McKay-Corkum topped Centola at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1 and his namesake Sam Son took down Dylan Melnik 6-1, 6-1 at fourth singles. Tim Luz notched a win in the fifth match, defeating Chen 6-3, 6-2 and Eric Johnson sealed the shutout, rolling through Lee 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 to end the day.
With the win, the Lions improve to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in CCC play. Wentworth, which is still in the early part of its season, sits at 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in conference.
Eastern Nazarene is slated to take on UMass-Dartmouth at home on Wednesday in a 3:00 pm contest. Wentworth will host non-conference opponent Emerson on April 5th at 3:30 pm.
