#17 Men’s Volleyball Downs #13 MIT in Four Sets on Senior Day
Eli Turner tallied 16 kills and Brayden Green dished out 44 assists as the Black & Gold beat MIT for the second time this season
BOSTON, Mass. – The #17 Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team picked up a big win with a four-set victory over the #13 MIT Engineers on Saturday afternoon. The Leopards are 2-0 against the Engineers this season.
Eli Turner had 16 kills to lead the team and added five digs and one block. Alem Dubcak had 10 kills, and Nicolai Bell added nine finishes. Brayden Green dished out 44 assists and seven digs to lead the team. Bell, Dubcak, and Matthew Zegowtiz each tallied three blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The sides went back and forth to open the first set with Dubcak tying the game at 4-4-4. MIT rattled off three straight points before the Leopards answered with three in a row to even the score again. After the Engineers went up 13-11, Benjamin Moughon's finish made it a one-point game. MIT stayed in front late with a 19-16 lead before Turner and Zegowtiz got the score to 19-18. The Engineers outscored Wentworth 8-7 to win the first frame 27-25 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
- MIT opened the scoring in the second frame, and the sides went back and forth again in the first few points of the set. After tying the game at 6-6, Wentworth took an 11-7 lead behind a kill and two aces from Moughon. The Leopards maintained their edge late in the set, taking a 19-13 lead after Bell's strong finish. Wentworth held off a late surge from MIT and evened the match with a 25-21 win in set two.
- Attack errors gave the Leopards an early 3-0 lead in set three. MIT answered with a 5-2 run to tie the game 5-5 before the Leopards jumped back in front. The Engineers took the lead after a service error and held the advantage with the score now 16-12. Wentworth scored five straight points thanks to kills from Moughon and Bell to jump back in front by one. Dubcak and Bell extended the lead to 20-18 with the third set within reach. Turner tallied the final kill of the frame to secure the set 25-20 and put Wentworth in front 2-1 in the match.
- The teams went back and forth in the fourth frame with the score staying tied until 9-9. Turner tallied back-to-back kills to put the Leopards in front and Zegowitz added a finish to keep the hosts in front 13-10. MIT battled back and the sides exchanged points with the Leopards' lead down to one point. A finish from Turner and an ace from bell made it 19-16 and gave Wentworth breathing room. Dubcak and Zegowitz got the Leopards to match point before an ace from Dubcak secured the set 25-23 and gave Wentworth the 3-1 victory.

- Today was the 48th all-time meeting between the teams.
