DeMedeiros Named CCC Rookie of the Week
Freshman Kayla DeMedeiros struck out a total of eight batters, including seven in a 6-5 win over Newbury, and batted .500 on the week to earn weekly honors from the CCC
BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) helped the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team to a 1-1 record last week and her efforts saw her earn Commonwealth Coast Conference Rookie of the Week honors. DeMedeiros earns the honor for games played from March 19-25.
DeMedeiros picked up her second win of the season in the circle as the Leopards edged Newbury in the opening game of a doubleheader, 6-5. In that game she had seven strikeouts with the seventh coming as the Nighthawks had runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to seal the win. She helped her own cause at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and three runs batted in. In the nightcap she went 1-for-2 at the plate to finish the week with a .500 average (3-for-6) and she also struck out a batter in a scoreless inning of work.
On the season she has a .296 batting average with a pair of doubles and five RBI. In the circle she is 2-2 in nine appearances (four starts, three complete games) and has struck out 26 batters in 32.1 innings of work. Her 26 strikeouts presently ranks her fourth among CCC pitchers.
Wentworth has its CCC opener on Wednesday as the Leopards host the University of New England in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 pm.
