Softball Salvages Split versus Framingham State
Leopards topple Rams with 13 hits in a 11-3 nightcap outing; Rams defeat Black & Gold 10-1 in game one
BOSTON, Mass. – Despite being topped in game one by a 10-1 score, the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (16-18) responded in the nightcap with a 11-3 offensive onslaught, featuring 13 hits, over Framingham State (22-10) in non-conference action Thursday night.
GAME ONE: FRAMINGHAM STATE 10, WENTWORTH 1 (FINAL – 6 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Rams kickstarted their advantage with a three-run first inning, with a pair coming on the first and second outs of the frame. The Leopards got on the board in the back half of the frame as a double play by Framingham State led home a score by Katelin Howe, marking a 3-1 game.
- Framingham State added to their lead in the third inning, first capitalizing on a wild pitch before an RBI double and RBI single each drove home a run aside, raising the score to 6-1. In the fourth, an RBI double by Ellie Etemad-Gilbertson plated another run.
- In the sixth, a pair of RBI singles plated three runs, extending the Rams' advantage to 10-1. In the back half of the frame, Katie Kranz doubled to lead off for the Leopards before Brianna Miller singled to bring Jenna Roche, pinch running for Kranz, to third. However, the Rams caught Roche out at home and retired the following batter to end any comeback threat.
- Miller and Jess Rowe paced the offense with a pair of hits aside. In the circle, Julia Malowitz took the loss, surrendering seven hits and five earned runs while striking out four. In relief, Maddy Longoria faced eight hits in a pair of innings while Julie Schriver struck out one and gave up two hits in a frame of work.
GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 11, FRAMINGHAM STATE 3 (FINAL – 5 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After the Rams capitalized on an error in the opening frame, the Leopards responded with four runs in the back half of the inning. Respective RBI singles by Rowe and Kyla Igawa drove in a runner apiece before a ground out and a forced walk with the bases loaded plated another pair, marking a 4-1 score.
- An RBI single for the Rams with two runners on brought one home, cutting their deficit to 4-2 in the second. In the back half of the frame, a sacrifice fly by Kelsey Medalia plated a score by Lexi Lefkowski, marking a 5-2 game.
- Another RBI single for the Rams in the third again cut their deficit to two at 5-3. However, Wentworth scored big in the fifth, beginning with a Miller triple plating an initial run. From there, Howe, Rowe, and Malowitz each secured respective RBI singles to plate a run aside before a Linnea Carlson double sent home another two runners, marking an 11-3 final.
- Igawa was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for the Leopards while Carlson led with three RBI. In the circle, Rowe pitched a complete game, fanning six batters and surrendering just four hits.
SERIES NOTES:
- Winners of five of the last six, Wentworth leads the all-time series, 5-3.
