Softball Rallies Past Suffolk, Earns Split
Leopards rally in game one to edge Rams, 3-2, before falling in nightcap; Katie Kranz totals four hits on the day, inches closer to major milestone
BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team rallied past the Suffolk Rams in Conference of New England action Sunday afternoon, edging their conference foe by a 3-2 score before falling by a 5-0 decision in the nightcap.
With the split, the Leopards raise their record to 17-19 overall and 6-8 in conference play. The Rams now sit at 15-16 overall and 9-6 in CNE action.
GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 3, SUFFOLK 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The two teams juked it out in the early going with the Leopards nearly getting on the board on a triple by Katie Kranz in the back half of the third. Wentworth broke the scoreless tie in the fifth as a triple by Kelsey Medalia brought home Jess Rowe, marking a 1-0 score.
- The Rams knotted the game at one aside in the sixth on an RBI single. In the seventh, Suffolk took a 2-1 edge as an RBI single with two runners on plated one. However, a fly out on the next at-bat ended the threat.
- In the back half of the seventh, singles by Kranz and Linnea Carlson put the Leopards in scoring position before a fielder's choice loaded the bags. An RBI single by Katelin Howe brought home a score by Carlson before an error on a fielder's choice led to a walk-off run for the Black & Gold, marking a 3-2 game.
- Kranz paced the offense, going 3-for-3 at the plate. In the circle, Rowe fanned seven batters and surrendered seven hits in a complete game.
GAME TWO: SUFFOLK 5, WENTWORTH 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Suffolk set out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning as back-to-back RBI doubles from the one-and two-spot brought home a run apiece. In the sixth, the Rams extended their lead to 3-0, capitalizing on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.
- In the seventh, a pair of back-to-back doubles scored another respective runner on each for Suffolk, pushing their advantage to 5-0. In the back half of the frame, Kranz and Brianna Miller each singled with two outs on the board before the Rams retired the Leopards' final batter, ending the comeback bid.
- Miller led the offense with a pair of hits. In the circle, Julia Malowitz struck out three batters and surrendered 12 hits in 6.2 innings of work. Hayley Hines retired her only batter faced in relief.
NOTEWORTHY:
- With four hits on the day, Kranz now sits just four hits shy of 100 in her career.
SERIES NOTES:
- The Leopards have won five of the last seven meetings between the two teams.
