Softball Drops Pair Against Elizabethtown, Alma
The Leopards lost a tightly contested first game against the Bluejays before dropping game two of the afternoon against the Scots
CLERMONT, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team fell to the Elizabethtown Bluejays and the Alma Scots on Friday afternoon, falling to 1-7 on the season. The Leopards drop a seventh consecutive game. Kyla Igawa became the program leader in career doubles on Friday.
GAME 1: Elizabethtown 8, Wentworth 7
Lauren Trostel went 3-5 with three RBI and two runs. Quincy Bolduc and Lexi Lefkowski tallied two hits apiece with Lefkowski scoring two runs. Kyla Igawa recorded her 39th career double to become the Wentworth Softball program leader in career doubles. Kelsey Medalia added three hits in four at bats and Jasmine Feliciano tallied one hit and one run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Igawa's record-breaking double came in the first inning as she drilled one to left center to score Lefkowski and give Wentworth a 1-0 lead. Trostel followed with a single up the middle to bring in Igawa and Feliciano, extending the lead to 3-0. The Bluejays answered in the bottom half of the frame with two runs to cut the lead to one.
- Trostel doubled to left field in the second inning to bring in Lefkowski and restore the Leopards' two-run edge. A sacrifice fly from Maddie Reever got the Bluejays back within one run through three innings. Medalia singled through the left side to score Trostel as Wentworth took a 5-3 lead through four innings.
- Lily Baldwin came up big for Elizabethtown in the fifth inning with a double to left field to bring in two runs and tie the game at 5-5. Medalia put the Leopards back in front with an RBI double to left center in the top of the sixth. The back-and-forth action continued with Brooke Huczko tying the game with an RBI single.
- The Leopards had the bases loaded in the top of seventh before Feliciano's infield single score Jenna Roche, putting Wentworth back in front 7-6. Three were left on base as the game moved to the bottom of the inning.
- Reever drilled a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game before the Bluejays loaded the bases. A fielding error brought in the winning run and Elizabethtown came away with an 8-7 victory.
THE SERIES
- Today was the fourth all-time meeting between the teams.
GAME 2: Alma 8, Wentworth 2
Julie Schriver fell to 1-3 on the year after 4.1 innings with four earned runs. Maddy Longoria recorded one strikeout in 1.1 innings to finish the game. Lexi Lefkowski, Kyla Igawa, and Jenna Roche tallied two hits apiece while Lefkowski and Jasmine Feliciano scored the runs. Igawa and Brianna Miller each had one RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Schriver started off strong on the mound, retiring the Scots in order in the first inning. The senior got out of a jam in the second and third to keep the game tied at 0-0. The Leopards opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Igawa that brought in Lefkowski. Gen Cook's RBI single in the fourth brought in Lily Thompson and the Scots tied the game.
- Miller restored the lead for Wentworth when she drilled a ball to right center to score Feliciano and make it a 2-1 game. Alma responded in the fifth with Katelyn Thomas bringing in two runs with a single to right and Julia Duncan scoring on an attempt to catch Thomas stealing.
- Trostel singled to center in the bottom of the fifth but was left stranded as the Leopards offense struggled to get back into the game. Alma tacked on four runs in the top of the six to take a commanding 8-2 lead, which they would carry into a win.
THE SERIES
- Today was the first all-time meeting between the teams.
