Softball Sweeps Nichols
The Leopards took game 3-0 before securing the sweep with a 4-1 victory in game two
DUDLEY, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team swept the Nichols Bison in a Conference New England matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Leopards improve to 8-22 this season with a 5-8 mark in league action.
GAME 1: Wentworth 3, Nichols 0
Lauren Trostel went 3-4 with one run and one RBI. Brianna Miller went 2-3 and added one run while Kyla Igawa went 2-4. Kelsey Medalia added one hit and one RBI, and Abby Delia scored one run. Julie Schriver went 4.2 innings with two strikeouts and Maddy Longoria went 2.1 innings, striking out one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Leopards opened the scoring in the second inning after Medalia singled through the right side to score Trostel, giving Wentworth a 1-0 lead. Delia reached on a fielder's choice in the third to bring in Miller, giving the Leopards a two-run lead. Delia would come in to score later that inning after Trostel doubled to right center field. Wentworth held a 3-0 edge through three innings.
- Schriver threw four scoreless innings and got the first two outs of the fifth before Longoria took over on the mound. The freshman got out of the fifth and recorded one strikeout in the sixth to keep the Leopards in front and the shutout alive.
- The Bison had runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Leopards turned a 1-6-3 double play to end the frame and take game one 3-0.
GAME 2: Wentworth 4, Nichols 1
Trostel went 3-4 in game two with one run and one RBI, including a three-run home run. Miller also hit a home run and scored one run. Igawa tallied a hit and scored one run. Julia Malowitz threw a complete game, striking out five hitters to improve to 2-10 this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Miller hit a solo homer to left field to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Trostel followed with a three-run home run to left field, stretching the advantage to 4-0.
- Malowitz kept the bison off the board, throwing three scoreless frames with two strikeouts. The Bison scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning behind Ava Slavinsky's RBI single, cutting the lead to 4-1.
- Malowitz pitched well, keeping the Bison from adding to their tally through the fifth and sixth innings. Wentworth could not add to its lead in the seventh, sending the game to final frame with a 4-1 lead.
- Nichols put two runners on with two outs, but the Leopards' defense got the final out to secure the 4-1 win and get the sweep over the Bison.
THE SERIES
- Today was the 52nd and 53rd all-time meeting between the teams.
