Softball Sweeps Gordon on Senior Day
The Black & Gold pick up a pair of important CNE wins as the regular season winds down; Julie Schriver records her 300th career strikeout
BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team swept the Gordon Fighting Scots in Friday's doubleheader. Prior to the games, the Leopards celebrated their senior class with a senior day ceremony. Wentworth won game one 8-0 in five innings before taking game two 6-1 to complete the sweep.
GAME 1: Wentworth 8, Gordon 0 (5 Inn.)
Julie Schriver threw a complete game shutout with six strikeouts, recording her 300th career strikeout in the fourth inning. Brianna Miller went 2-2 with two runs and one RBI while Kyla Igawa went 2-3 with three RBI and one run. Lauren Trostel and Kelsey Medalia each went 2-3 with Trostel scoring one run and Medalia tallying two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Schriver struck out the first hitter she faced, and the defense turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame. Miller drew a walk before stealing second and advancing to third to put a runner in scoring position. Igawa's ground out scored Miller to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
- Feliciano caught an infield popup and threw a runner out at first, turning the second double play of the game for the Leopards to get out of the top of the second inning with the lead.
- Miller's RBI single made it 2-0 before Delia drove in another run to give Wentworth a 3-0 lead. Igawa followed with a single to left field, scoring two runs and stretching the Leopards' lead to 5-0 through two innings.
- Schriver struck out two and Habib caught a line drive to keep the shutout alive and bring Wentworth's offense back to the plate. The Leopards could not add to the lead and took a 5-0 edge into the fourth inning.
- Schriver struck out three hitters in the fourth, recording her 300th career strikeout, to keep the Fighting Scots off the board. Wentworth could not build on the lead in the bottom half, sending the game to the fifth. Schriver threw a scoreless fifth and the Leopards tacked on three runs to win game one 8-0 in five innings.
Julia Malowitz threw a complete game with five strikeouts to improve to 3-11 this season. Miller went 2-3 in game two with one run and one RBI while Quincy Bolduc went 2-3 with one run. Trostel tallied one hit, one run, and two RBI and Igawa went 1-3 with one hit and one run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Malowitz struck out two in a scoreless first inning and Igawa's RBI single in the bottom of the frame gave the Leopards a 1-0 lead. Delia stole home to make it 2-0 and Lefkowski's RBI single pushed the lead to three. Malowitz recorded another strikeout in a scoreless second inning.
- Trostel drilled a double to right center to score two runs and give Wentworth a 5-0 lead through two innings. The Leopards escaped a bases loaded jam after Medalia's diving line drive catch, bringing the offense back to the plate.
- Miller brought in Roche to make it 6-0 through three innings. Gordon got on the board in the fourth inning with one run to cut the lead to five.
- Malowitz continued to pitch well, throwing a scoreless fifth inning to keep Wentworth in front 6-1. The sophomore tossed another shutout frame, and the Leopards took a five-run lead into the seventh inning.
- Makayla Falco hit a leadoff triple, but the Leopards' defense turned two quick outs. Malowitz got the strikeout to end the game and secure the sweep for Wentworth.

- Today was the 60th and 61st all-time meetings between the teams.
