Softball Earns Split at Suffolk
The Leopards dropped game one before taking game two to earn the Saturday split
REVERE, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team earned the split in Saturday's doubleheader against the Suffolk Rams. The hosts took game one 8-0 in five innings before the Leopards took game two with a 3-1 win to earn the split.
GAME 1: Suffolk 8, Wentworth 0 (5 Inn.)
Kelsey Medalia went 1-1 and Lauren Trostel and Lexi Lefkowski each recorded one hit. Julie Schriver fell to 8-10 this season after throwing 3.0 innings with three strikeouts and four earned runs. Maddy Longoria came in for 1.0 inning, allowing four earned runs and recording one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Rams took the lead in the bottom of the third after a walk brought in the game's first run. Suffolk tacked on a second run with an RBI from Clair Basal before stretching the lead to 4-0 behind a double from Julia Mills that scored two runs.
- Suffolk tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning after a single through the right side scored one before an error by the Leopards allowed another run to come in. Dana Still's double scored two runs, and the Rams took an 8-0 lead.
- Lefkowski's leadoff bunt put a runner on in the fifth, but the Rams recorded three quick outs to secure the win in five innings.
GAME 2: Wentworth 3, Suffolk 1
Medalia went 3-4 with one RBI while Trostel went 2-3 with a home run and two RBI. Quincy Bolduc went 2-3 with Miller and Abby Delia recorded one hit each. Julia Malowitz threw a complete game with one strikeout to improve to 4-11 this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wentworth got off to a good start with Trostel hitting a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Leopards an early 2-0 lead. Malowitz struck out one hitter in back-to-back scoreless innings.
- Suffolk got on the board in the third inning after a sacrifice fly by Julia Mills, cutting the lead to 2-1. Malowitz shut down the Rams in the next two innings, but the Leopards were unable to add to their lead and took a slim 2-1 advantage into the sixth inning.
- Neither side scored in the sixth inning and the Leopards took a one-run lead into the final frame. Medalia's RBI single in the seventh scored Igawa and gave the Leopards a two-run lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.
- The defense turned a double play before Medalia caught a pop up to give Wentworth the 3-1 win and split in the doubleheader.
THE SERIES
- Today was the 29th and 30th all-time meetings between the teams.
