Igawa Headlines Softball Postseason Awards
Kyla Igawa is named the CNE Scholar Athlete of the Year; Three other Leopards earn CNE All-Conference honors
BEVERLY, Mass. – Kyla Igawa was named the Conference of New England Scholar Athlete of the Year, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Lauren Trostel earned CNE All-Conference First Team honors and Brianna Miller earned CNE All-Conference Second Team honors. Haliegh Borden represents the Leopards on the CNE Community Service Team.
Igawa completed her undergraduate degree in applied mathematics with a 3.642 GPA and her graduate degree in data science with 3.916 GPA. On the field, Igawa played in all 40 games this season for the Leopards, totaling 122 at bats with 42 hits, 23 RBI, and six doubles. She had a .344 batting average and .393 slugging percentage with a .404 on base percentage. Igawa saw time behind the plate and at first base, putting together a .985 fielding percentage with 188 putouts. On March 6, she became the program leader in doubles and finished with 42 in total in her career.
Trostel had an outstanding sophomore season for the Leopards, playing in all 40 games this season. She led the team and was sixth in the league with a .407 batting average. Her 50 hits led the team and had her third in the conference and she led the league with 16 doubles. Trostel hit a team-high seven home runs and was tied for fifth in the league. She was ninth in the CNE with 32 RBI and second with 89 total bases while sitting third in the league with a .724 slugging percentage. In the field, Trostel saw time behind the plate with 82 putouts, 11 assists, and a .989 fielding percentage. This is her second all-conference honor after she was named to the conference third team last season.
Miller was a key figure in the Leopards' offense and outfield once again this season, playing in 36 games. She was fourth on the team, hitting .337 with 34 hits. The junior tallied 15 RBI, eight doubles, one triple, and one home run with a .465 slugging percentage, second-best on the team. Miller had a on base percentage of .414 and had a .971 fielding percentage with 62 putouts. This is Miller's second all-conference honor after she was named rookie of the year in her freshman season.
Borden represents the Leopards on the CNE Community Service Team after making seven appearances this season. Last summer, prior to beginning her career at Wentworth, Borden courageously battled and overcame Hodgkin's Lymphoma, showing tremendous strength and resilience that inspired everyone around her. She, along with the softball team, walked 13.1 miles and raised nearly $1,000 — the highest total on the team — toward their $5,000 fundraising goal and grand total of over $25k towards cancer research. Borden is always willing to be part of something bigger than herself. She supports her teammates, works hard, and can always be counted on to give back to the community.
