DUDLEY, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team finished their season Monday evening, as Nichols College pulled away late to pick up a 67-57 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Bison got the first points of the game, as Jillian Spillane (Paxton, Mass.) gave them the lead with an early basket. Just over a minute later, the Leopards went in front following a three pointer from freshman forward Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.), who led all Wentworth players with 19 points and 11 rebounds in the contest while going 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. The Leopards took over throughout the rest of the opening quarter, as Amoddio's three was the start of 15 unanswered points for Wentworth. She hit another three moments later, giving the visitors a 6-2 lead, and was followed up by freshman forward Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) and junior guard Francesca Farrell (Stoneham, Mass.) adding a pair of layups. Freshman guard Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) added another three pointer for Wentworth, and junior guard Abriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska) closed out the run with a jumper as the Leopards took a 15-2 lead. Nichols was able to slightly cut into the lead prior to the end of the first, as Spillane put in a pair of layups in the closing minutes. Still, the Leopards held a 17-7 advantage at the end of one.
  • Wentworth was able to add to the lead early in the second, as Amoddio hit a jumper to extend the lead to 12. The Bison then put together a few successful possessions and went on an 8-1 run, cutting the lead down to five with under four minutes left in the half. Busbey answered with a jumper, which was followed by a three pointer from Abrianna Vasquez, the games leading scorer with 21 points. Amoddio came right back with her third three pointer of the night as part of five straight points for the Leopards, giving them a 27-18 lead with a little over two minutes remaining. With Wentworth still holding a nine point lead in the final seconds, Nichols connected on a three, then forced a turnover and hit a pair of free throws all in the final 15 seconds of the quarter, cutting the lead down to five going into halftime.
  • Foster got the Leopards started in the third with a basket to extend the lead to seven, but Vasquez came back with a three for Nichols. Amoddio answered with five straight points, as the teams went back and forth with Wentworth holding a 36-28 advantage with four minutes gone by in the quarter. The Bison then took control, scoring eight straight points in just over one minute to tie the game. Carroll hit a jumper to break the skid, followed by a layup from Vasquez to knot the score at 38-38. A pair of free throws gave Nichols their first lead since the opening minutes of the game, but Carroll responded with a shot from beyond the arc to put Wentworth ahead by one. However, the Bison connected on another basket in the closing seconds, putting the home team ahead 40-39 heading into the final quarter.
  • The Leopards took the lead back early in the fourth thanks to sophomore guard Nattaly David (Hyde Park, Mass.). The sophomore scored five straight points, first nailing a three pointer then following it up with a jumper. The Leopards held a 46-42 lead at that point, and two made free throws from Carroll moments later pushed the lead to six points. Spillane answered with back-to-back layups for Nichols to cut the lead to two, but Foster then put in a layup for Wentworth. Vasquez got the Bison within a point after hitting another three, and the home team then took the lead thanks to a pair of layups from Summer Klein (Stamford, Conn.). David got Wentworth back within a point after a made jumper with four minutes remaining, and the Leopards took the lead back after a made free throw and layup from Foster, who had nine points total on the night. Following a Wentworth miss, Vasquez connected on her fourth and final three pointer of the game, putting the Bison ahead 56-55 with 2:29 remaining. Busbey then came through with a pair of free throws, giving the visitors a one point lead with just under two minutes left. But Nichols closed out the game strong, scoring the final 11 points of the contest. Four different players got on the board for the home team during the run, which lasted the final 1:29 of the quarter and gave the Bison a 67-57 victory in the CCC first round matchup.

THE SERIES 

  • This was the 39th meeting between the two programs and the second time the teams have met in the postseason. Nichols now holds a 22-17 advantage in the series.
