Women’s Basketball Suffers Setback at Vermont State-Lyndon
Mia Luna Zayas led the way with 18 points, going 5-13 from three. Gianna Gioia added 14 points and grabbed eight boards to go with five assists.
LYNDON, VT – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball fell to 0-4 on the year with a 66-47 loss to Vermont State-Lyndon on Saturday afternoon. Mia Luna Zayas continues to put up points, scoring a team-high 18 points, shooting 5-13 from behind the arc. Gianna Gioia added 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Tita Rana dished out a team-high seven assists to go with seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Taylor Garabedian had a team-high 13 rebounds and had four assists and two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Gianna Gioia scored the first two buckets for the Leopards as Lyndon took an 11-4 lead four minutes into the game. The hosts pushed the advantage to 17-4 before a triple from Zayas broke Wentworth's scoring drought. Zayas hit another three in the final 90 seconds to make it a 17-10 game after one.
- Zayas opened the second with a jumper to make it a five-point game, scoring the Leopards' last eight points. The Hornets answered and restored their 12-point lead at the midway mark of the second. Elise Ayer hit back-to-back shots to get herself on the scoresheet and keep Wentworth within thirteen. Garabedian's three-point play and Ayer's layup were the last buckets of the half as Lyndon took a 39-24 into the half.
- The Leopards went nearly five minutes without a basket in the third quarter while the Hornets stretched their lead to 47-24. Tita Rana knocked down a three to end the scoring drought and Zayas hit another triple a minute later after a Lyndon turnover. Zayas hit a three after Gioia grabbed an offensive board, cutting the lead down to fourteen. Gioia's jumper in the final minute made it 52-38 after three.
- Gioia hit the first shot of the fourth quarter, a jumper coming almost two minutes into the frame. The Hornets had an answer for each Leopard basket and maintained a comfortable halfway through the fourth. Garabedian hit a jumper to make the deficit 13 points, but Lyndon closed the quarter on a 9-3 run to win 66-47.
