BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell to UMass Boston 79-48 on Tuesday night with Mia Luna Zayas leading the Leopards with 17 points, shooting 5-8 from behind the arc. Taylor Garabedian had another solid night on both ends of the floor, scoring 10 points and grabbing a team-high nine rebounds and five assists. Elise Ayer added eight points and six rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UMass Boston came out strong and built a 14-1 lead in the opening five minutes of the game. The Beacons' full-court press was difficult for the Leopards to break through as they were held to just one point in five minutes. Garabedian and Ayer hit shots to get Wentworth's offense going, but UMass Boston maintained their double-digit lead. Tita Rana hit a three in the final 90 seconds of the quarter as the Leopards trailed 27-12 after one.
- Wentworth had a strong second quarter with Zayas and Ayer combing for five points to cut into the lead. Gianna Gioia's three and a jumper from Zayas got the Leopards right back into the game, now trailing by seven. The Beacons answered with a 9-0 run and forced three turnovers to take control of the game again. Ayer's layup with 3:34 to play in the half was the last bucket of the half for Wentworth and UMass Boston took a 42-24 lead into the break.
- The Leopards were held scoreless for the first three minutes of the third quarter as UMass Boston stretched their lead to 24 points. After Kaydie Sturm's three, Zayas knocked down threes on the next three possessions for the Leopards to cut the deficit to 17 points. Another run from the Beacons pushed the lead to 28 before Rana's layup broke the scoring drought in the final minute of the frame.
- The defensive pressure from the Beacons stifled the Leopards' offense, keeping them off the board for the opening five minutes of the fourth. Zayas hit another three and Grace Moltenbrey added five points in the closing stages of the game. UMass Boston came away with the 79-48 victory.
