Women’s Basketball Drops Conference Matchup at Roger Williams
Mia Luna Zayas led the team with 10 points while Elise Ayer added 9 points and 6 rebounds. Taylor Garabedian tallied 6 rebounds and 6 points while Tita Rana recorded 3 assists.
BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball fell 62-26 in the first game of the new year on Saturday afternoon at Roger Williams. Mia Luna Zayas and Elise Ayer each scored nine points to lead the team while Ayer and Taylor Garabedian each grabbed six rebounds. Garabedian added six points and Tita Rana dished out a team-high three assists. The Hawks improve to 6-6 on the year and 3-1 in conference play. Wentworth falls to 1-11 on the season and 0-4 in CNE action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Gianna Gioia got the Leopards on the board first with a pull up jumper after three defensive stops for the visitors. Ayer added a layup while Lilli Clark scored the first two buckets for Roger Williams as the teams were tied 4-4 at the midway mark of the first quarter. After the Hawks took the lead, Zayas knocked down a triple to put Wentworth in front 7-6. Another triple from Zayas made it 10-9 before the Hawks finished the frame with a 5-0 run to lead 15-10 after 10 minutes.
- The second quarter was a low scoring frame with both teams scoring just six points. Ayer scored all six points for the Leopards while Sophia Coppola and Chelsea Gravier scored the points for the Hawks. Wentworth turned the ball over four times in the second quarter while the hosts had three turnovers. Roger Williams led 21-16 at the half.
- Zayas hit another three in the opening two minutes of the third, but Roger Williams used a 10-0 run to push their lead to 31-19 at the midway point of the quarter. Free throws from Garabedian and Ayer added to the Leopards' tally, but the hosts led 41-23 heading into the fourth quarter.
- Wentworth struggled from the floor in the fourth quarter while the Hawks scored six points in the first two minutes of the frame, extending the lead to 24 points. Roger Williams stayed in control, outscoring Wentworth 21-3 in the final frame, and cruised to a 62-26 win.
