Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Fitchburg State in Season Opener
Maggie McCann led the way with four goals while Grace Del Pilar added two goals and an assist

BOSTON, Mass. – Maggie McCann tallied four goals in the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team's loss in the season opener on Wednesday night. Grace Del Pilar added two goals and an assist while Anna Faberlle and Sydney Vega added a goal and assist each. Lily Cohen made 10 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hannah Azzari opened the scoring for the visitors before McCann scored the first goal of the season for the Leopards to tie the game three minutes later. Vega got the assist on the McCann goal for her first point of the season. Paige Marchand gave Fitchburg State the lead just 10 seconds later. McCann tallied her second goal of the game with a free position shot with five minutes to play in the first, tying the game. Grace Del Pilar's unassisted goal put the Leopards in front 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.
- The Falcons rattled off three goals in the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead. Jessica St. George and Samanatha Azzari scored, and Nevaeh Chiacchia tallied her first of the year on a free position shot. Wentworth answered with goals from Del Pilar and Faberlle, assisting each other to tie the game once again. Ciacchia scored her second of the game with 2:41 to play to put Fitchburg back in front, a lead they would take into the half.
- Hannah Azzari's tally in the third made it 7-5 early in the third quarter. Wentworth went a player up after a green card to Noelle Kennedy and McCann tallied her second goal of the game to make it 7-6. Cohen made a big save in the third to keep it a one-goal game before Vega got on the board to tie the game at 7-7 with 24 seconds to play in the third.
- Fitchburg took the lead back with a player-up, free position goal from St. George. Kennedy added another tally 19 seconds later to put the visitors in front 9-7. After a goal from Samantha Azzari made it 10-7, McCann scored her fourth goal of the game to get the Leopards back in it. The Falcons added two goals in the final six minutes to secure the 12-8 victory.

- Tonight was the 3rd all-time meeting between the teams.
