Women’s Lacrosse Rolls Past Anna Maria
Sydney Vega scores 5 goals and Grace Del Pilar nets 4 as the Black & Gold cruise to a 17-0 win over Anna Maria
PAXTON, Mass. – Sydney Vega tallied five goals and one assist to lead the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team to a 17-0 shut out against Anna Maria on Thursday night. Grace Del Pilar added four goals and an assist while Maggie McCann and Olivia Shultz each added two goals. Nya Breedy scored her first collegiate goal while Bella Gillis added her first of the season. Grace Sweet scored a goal and had two assists, and Lily Cohen made three saves to earn her second career shutout and the second clean sheet in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wentworth took an early lead behind Vega's first goal of the game, just four minutes into the contest. McCann added an unassisted goal a minute later to give the Leopards a 2-0 lead right out of the gate.
- Vega scored her second unassisted goal of the quarter, and Del Pilar added a tally in the final minute of the quarter, with Vega getting the assist, to put the Leopards in front 4-0.
- Wentworth's defense held Anna Maria without a shot in the first quarter.
- McCann scored her second goal of the game just over a minute into the second quarter, with Del Pilar getting the assist.
- Del Pilar scored on a free position shot to extend Wentworth's advantage to 6-0. Vega added her third goal 16 seconds later to complete her hat trick with the Leopards in complete control.
- Del Pilar scored twice in three minutes to put her tally at four and extended the lead to 9-0. Vega netted her fourth and Olivia Shultz scored twice in the final two minutes to give Wentworth a 12-0 lead at the break.
- The Leopards did not allow a shot in the first half while firing off 22 with 17 on goal and held a 7-5 edge in draw controls.
- Nya Breedy and Grace Sweet scored in the opening four minutes of the third and Tessa Wilkie netted her third goal of the year in the final two minutes to put Wentworth up 15-0.
- Another tally from Vega and a first goal of the season for Bella Gillis in the fourth quarter made it 17-0 Leopards. Anna Maria registered just three shots on goal, all of which were stopped by Cohen.
THE SERIES
- Tonight was the second all-time meeting between the teams. Wentworth is 2-0 against Anna Maria.
