McCann Scores Late as Women’s Lacrosse Outlasts Curry
The Leopards win a back-and-forth contest thanks to Maggie McCann’s late tally
MILTON, Mass. – Maggie McCann scored the winning goal with 1:23 to play to lift the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 10-9 win over Curry on Saturday afternoon. Tessa Wilkie scored four goals and grabbed five ground balls with four draw controls. McCann added two goals and three ground balls and Aliviah MacCormack added two goals. Lily Cohen made 10 saves to improve to 4-5 this season. The Leopards had a 13-9 advantage in draw controls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sydney Vega gave the Leopards the lead with an unassisted goal just under 90 seconds into the game. Curry tied the game with a player-down goal from Ella Palanza but 30 seconds later, Wilkie restored the Leopards' lead with a player-up goal. Less than a minute later, Nichole Michael tied the game for Curry.
- Wentworth went on a 3-0 run with goals from MacCormack, McCann, and Wilkie to take a 5-2 lead. Curry answered with three straight goals in the final 2:20 to make it a 5-5 game after one.
- MacCormack scored a free position shot to give Wentworth the lead before Palanza's unassisted goal sent the teams into the halftime break tied 6-6. Cohen made seven saves in the first half.
- The teams battled and exchanged shots but the game remained tied late in the third quarter. The Colonels scored on two free position shots to take an 8-6 lead before Wilkie's player-up tally made it a one-goal game heading into the fourth quarter.
- Grace Sweet's unassisted goal tied the game but less than a minute later Curry jumped back in front thanks to another tally from Palanza. Maggie Belcher assisted Wilkie's fourth goal of the game to tie things up at 9-9 with 10:51 to go.
- McCann came up huge with an unassisted goal with 1:23 to play to give the Leopards the late advantage. Wentworth held on to win 10-9 and earn its first CNE win of the season.
