PAXTON, Mass. – Junior Megan Rogoff (Uncasville, Conn.) scored a goal and added an assist to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team past Anna Maria College, 3-0, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup played at AMCAT Field. With the win the Leopards, who snapped a two-game losing streak, improve to 3-8 (2-4 TCCC) while the AMCATS fall to 1-11 (0-7 TCCC) with the loss.
The pace of the first half was dictated by the Leopards, who tallied 11 shots while holding the AMCATS without a single attempt. However, while six of those shots were on net, Wentworth was unable to break into the scoring column despite having a chance in the 15th minute that ricocheted off the post. Ten minutes later the Leopards saw another scoring opportunity pass when a shot headed toward an open net, but was cleared away by an Anna Maria defender.
Eight minutes into the second half, Wentworth finally broke through when junior Jess Kruger (Belmont, N.H.) controlled the ball up the field and centered a pass to freshman Elizabeth Somma (Windham, Maine) who deposited the ball in the lower right corner of the net for her team-leading fifth tally of the season. The goal was the first one for the Leopards since the second half of a 4-1 win over Nichols on Sept. 21, a span of 261:38.
Wentworth scored again in the 84th minute on when Rogoff notched her first marker of the season, set-up by freshman Kat Gonzalez (Middlebury, Conn.). Rogoff assisted on freshman Carli Cabana's (East Sandwich, Mass) first career goal, an insurance goal in the 88th minute that put the visitors up 3-0.
The Leopards outshot the AMCATS 20-5 in the contest, while leading in corner kicks by a 13-0 advantage. Freshman keeper Jess Gardener saved both shots she faced to earn her first career shutout, while Anna Maria freshman Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.) turned away seven shots in a losing effort.
Both teams continue conference play this weekend as the AMCATS travel to Nichols on Friday (Oct. 9) for a 7:30 p.m. tilt against the Bison. Wentworth travels to Western New England on Saturday (Oct. 10) for a 1:30 p.m. game against the Golden Bears.
