Wentworth Downs Eastern Nazarene, 5-1
Lucy Brown scores a goal and two assists, four others record goals in TCCC win
BOSTON, Mass. – Five different players scored goals, including junior midfielder Lucy Brown (Plainville, Conn.) who also had a pair of assists as the Wentworth women's soccer team used a three-goal second half to extend a 2-1 halftime lead and take a 5-1 in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Sweeney Field.
The host Leopards got on the board at the 24:53 mark when Brown served a cross to sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Somma (Windham, Maine), who headed the ball to the inside of the far post. Wentworth had little time to relish the lead, though, as, after the ensuing kickoff a defensive misclear would give Lion junior Jillian Thornton (Guilderland, N.Y.) the ball outside of the box. Thornton fired a shot from inside the 18-yard box into an open net, tying the game at 25:06. Wentworth freshman Jenelle Wolff (Portland, Conn.) helped give the Leopards the lead for good when she found an open Jess Kruger (Belmont, N.H.), who found an opening in the upper left of the net at 38:41.
Just 49 seconds into the second half Wentworth extended its lead to 3-1 when freshman midfielder Ashley Cook (San Diego, Calif.) took a corner kick from the right corner, where sophomore Carli Cabana (East Sandwich, Mass.) headed it into the net. Brown pushed the lead to 4-1 at 63:30 when she picked up on a turnover and fired a low shot into the back of the net and would assist on junior forward Jess Cutler's (Scituate, Mass.) marker at 70:37.
Sophomore Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) made five saves for the Leopards, who improved to 2-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in TCCC play. Freshman Lisa Clark (West Deptford, N.J.) played the first 45:00 for the Lions, allowing two goals and making one save. Senior Victoria Sontag (Mount Vernon, N.H.) played the final 45:00, allowing three goals and making four saves for the Lions (2-2-1, 0-1-0).
Wentworth steps out of conference play for a Thursday evening game at Western Connecticut, while Eastern Nazarene is idle until a week from today when the Lions host Colby-Sawyer.
