DANBURY, CT - Graduate student Nicole Sieber (Newtown, CT) converted on a penalty kick in the 80th minute and lifted the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology at The WAC on Thursday night.
Sieber was awarded the 12-yard attempt when Jillian Duran (Uncasville, CT) was fouled inside the box. Sieber blasted the shot into the top right corner for her third goal of the season.
Wentworth (2-2-1) took a 1-0 lead when Lucy Brown (Plainville, CT) delivered a perfectly place free kick, from 22 yards away, over the head of Colonials keeper Amanda Simon (Brick, NJ) in the 20th minute.
WestConn (3-2) knotted the game at 1-1 following Lauren Francisco's (Ludlow, MA) first goal of the season. She received a short pass from Cecelia Dias (Prospect, CT) on the left side of the goalmouth and flicked it past Leopard net minder Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, MA).
Simon made one save for the Colonials while Gardner turned away 11 of WestConn's 30 shot attempts on the night.
WestConn opens Little East Conference play on Saturday, September 18 when it travels to arch-rival Eastern Connecticut State University. Game time is slated for 6 pm. That same afternoon the Leopards resume The Commonwealth Coast Conference play at Salve Regina at Noon.
