Women's Tennis Falls in Home Finale

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Boston women's tennis team swept the three duobles flights and captured three of the six singles flights as the Beacons snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-3 win over Wentworth in non-conference action played at Harvard University's Beren Tennis Center.

Senior Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, Mass.) teamed with classmate Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass.) to take an 8-3 win at number one over sophomore Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, mass.) and junior Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.). Freshman Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomore Logan Smith (Southwick, Mass.) won at number three over senior Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.) and junior Val Maccarone (Cranston, R.I.) before sophomore Solveig Castelli (Precojo, France) and freshman Nuha Muntasser (Braintree, Mass.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at number two over senior Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) and sophomore Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.)

The Beacons extended their lead to 4-0 when Muntasser defeated Corcoran, 6-3, 6-0 at number one. Wentworth cut the lead to 4-1 at number six when Hegner defeated freshman Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.), 6-1, 6-2 at number six. UMass Boston clinched the match when Kloczewiak defeated Massaro, 6-3, 6-3 at number two.

McColgan picked up a three-set (4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) win over Counts at number three and junior Marisa Page (Warwick, R.I.) won at number five, 6-3, 6-2, over Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey).

Castelli closed out the match with a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) win over Ofer at number five.

With the win UMass Boston improves to 3-7 and is at Bridgewater State on Saturday. Wentworth falls to 5-7 and closes out its season at Endicott, also on Saturday.
