Russo Wins 100th Game as Men's Lacrosse Rolls Past Clark
Head coach Dan Russo picked up his 100th career victory in the Leopards' 16-10 win over the Cougars; Gabe Cobham (five goals, one assist) and Colin Ocampo (four goals, two assists) each had six points in the win
WORCESTER, Mass. – Gabe Cobham scored five goals and added an assist and Colin Ocampo scored four times and assisted on two others as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team defeated Clark University, 16-10, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon. The win was a milestone win for 15th-year head coach Dan Russo, who picked up his 100th career triumph while patrolling the sidelines for the Leopards.
With the win the Leopards improve to 2-1 while the Cougars fall to 0-1 after their season opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth controlled the first quarter, scoring five times to lead 5-0. Cobham (13:45, 9:27) and Ocampo (11:30, 5:23) each scored twice while Tony Corrado also scored. The shutout continued as Ocampo scored 56 seconds into the second quarter followed by a goal from Cobham just under three minutes later.
- While Clark scored two of the next three goals, four different student-athletes (Tyler Longo, Jake Caraluzzi, Brendan Kroll (man-up), and Corrado each had goals to give the Black * Gold a 12-2 lead at the break. Kroll had a pair of assists during the run while Ocampo assisted on the Kroll man advantage marker.
- Cobham (13:29), Longo (9:37), and Kroll (1:34) each had goals for Wentworth in the third quarter, which saw its lead swell to 15-4 after 45 minutes of play. Ocampo completed the Leopards' scoring on the day when he scored 1:35 into the final quarter.
- Kroll finished with two goals and two assists, while Corrado had two goals and an assist and Longo found the back of the net twice. Keegan Buffa, Chuck Urda, Alex Wingall, and Dante String each scooped up four ground balls, while Wignall also caused five turnovers. A.J. Smith picked up the win (2-10, making 11 saves over the first 48:45. Matthew Russo made his collegiate debut over the final 11:15, making four saves. Wentworth had a 46-34 shot advantage on the day.
- The program's all-time win leader, Russo has posted a 100-117 record during his tenure, which includes a 29-12 mark in the last two-plus seasons.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today was the sixth all-time meeting between the two teams. Winners of five of the six meetings, Wentworth leads, 5-1.
