BRISTOL, R.I. – Isaac Chambass made a career-high 13 saves, however, a penalty kick goal in the 74th minute proved to be the difference as the Roger Williams University men's soccer team edged Wentworth Institute of Technology, 1-0, in Conference of New England action on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 13-1-4 overall and clinch first place in the CNE with an 8-1-1 record. The Leopards see their season come to an end with a record of 4-10-4 (3-6-0).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Roger Williams had a pair of chances early, with Chambass making a save in the fourth minute and a Wentworth back line defender clearing a shot attempt away in the sixth minute.
- The Hawks had a total of nine shots in the opening frame, with four of them going on net as Chambass made a pair of saves over the remainder of the half.
- Early in the second half, Wentworth had a chance when Brady Erickson put a shot towards the goal, however, it went wide of the mark.
- At the 57:25 mark, a foul occurred just inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Chambass made a diving stop going to his left on Max Patenaude's attempt to keep the game scoreless.
- The hosts continued to apply pressure and worked for scoring opportunities. At the 72:55 mark, a foul occurred in front of the net, resulting in Roger Williams' second penalty kick of the contest. Brandon Rodriguez stepped to the spot and converted the kick to make it 1-0.
- Elan Mendavil, Brady Erickson, and Carlos Jimenez each recorded shots for the Black & Gold.
