BOSTON, Mass. – Lily Carlson scored a pair of goals and Lina Arlanda added a pair of assists to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team defeat Nichols, 3-1, in a Conference of New England contest on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Leopards improve to 6-3-5 overall and 1-3-1 in CNE play while the Bison fall to 1-12-1 (0-6-0).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The teams traded shots on net in the early going, including when Brianna Reid served a corner kick to Brooke Finlay, whose bid was saved in the fifth minute of play.
- At the 12:11 mark, Arlander took a shot that was initially saved with the rebound finding Finlay, who three seconds later put a shot home to the lower middle for her fourth marker of the season.
- Finlay set up Carlson's first goal of the game at the 17:16 mark when she sent a pass from the right side of the box to the left side where Carlson corralled the ball and put home a shot to the lower middle of the net.
- Emily Gamboa Ordini made a pair of saves late in the half to keep the hosts ahead by two at the break.
- After an early corner kick by the Bison didn't yield a scoring chance, the Leopards capitalized to make it 3-0. Arlander played the ball along the right side, broke free of a defender and sent a cross through the box where Carlson's shot hit the left post and went in for her 10th goal of the season. Her 10 goals on the season ties presently ties her for the sixth-most in a single season in program history.
- A foul on Wentworth led to a direct kick and Nichols took advantage as Cassie Rice lofted a kick over the Wentworth defense and just over the fingertips of Kyleigh Murphy as the shot went to the upper right corner, making it 3-1 with 26:17 left.
- Elsa Horner nearly put the Black & Gold on top 4-1 but her direct kick attempt in the 87th minute hit the crossbar.
- Gamboa Ordini made five saves in the first half, while Murphy made two saves in the second half. Wentworth had a 23-13 shot advantage and a 4-2 edge on corner kicks.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was the 28th all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth has won the last two meetings as well as 12 of the last 13 meetings and leads the all-time series, 19-6-3.
