Women’s Volleyball Shuts Out WPI in Season Opener
Leopards use balanced attack on offense and strong defense to sweep Engineers; Kayla DeCastro leads with nine kills

WALTHAM, Mass. – With strong performances on both sides of the ball, the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team tipped off the 2025 season with a dominant 3-0 sweep over the WPI Engineers in non-conference action Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The two teams swapped points to open the first set before a kill by Emma Sanders capped a 5-0 run for the Leopards to give themselves a 9-3 lead. The Engineers fought back to close the gap at 12-10 before taking their first lead of the set at 16-15. Behind 18-17, the Black & Gold used an 8-0 run, featuring finishes by Sanders and Kinsey Lutz along with three aces by Kate Koliopoulos to rally for a 25-18 set win.
- A kill by Lutz marked a 6-1 advantage in the second set before another marked a 9-5 score later on. Two kills by Kayla DeCastro and two aces by Olivia Vaughn helped propel the advantage to 20-11 before kills by DeCastro, Lutz, and Sanders pushed Wentworth to a 25-16 set win.
- Three kills by DeCastro gave the Black & Gold a 4-1 lead in the third set before a finish by Lutz marked an 8-4 score. Two kills by Ava Rocchio carried the advantage to 14-10 before two kills by Sanders later on helped mark a 20-14 set. Back-to-back kills by Sanders ultimately determined a 25-20 set win for the Leopards.
- DeCastro (9 kills, .182 clip), Sanders (8, .375) and Lutz (7, .400) each helped pace the offense with the support of Vaughn's 26 assists. Defensively, Amanda Zweifler led with 16 digs.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today marked the 14th all-time meeting between the two teams.
