WALTHAM, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball capped the Brandeis Tournament on Saturday with a pair of non-conference defeats to the hands of the MIT Engineers and host Judges, both by way of sweep.
MATCH ONE: MIT 3, WENTWORTH 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The two teams swapped scores early in the set with an Emma Sanders kill marking a 7-5 deficit for the Black & Gold. A finish by Kayla DeCastro marked an 11-9 deficit before MIT pulled away with a 22-10 advantage. The Engineers suffered a slew of errors in the late going but ultimately held on for a 25-15 set win.
- MIT raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second set before kills by Sanders and Savannah Morford cut the deficit to 4-2. Behind 8-5, another finish by Morford helped Wentworth cut their deficit to 8-7 before a 5-0 run later in the stanza marked a 13-11 advantage for the Leopards. The Engineers later rallied to grab an 18-15 lead before a kill by Mika Swanson later cut the deficit at 22-19. However, MIT held on for a 25-19 set win.
- A pair of aces by Olivia Vaughn gave Wentworth a 4-2 lead early in the third set before another two aces and a finish by Sanders later on marked a 9-7 score. The Engineers answered with an 11-1 run to capture an 18-10 lead before a slew of errors capped with a kill by Sanders marked a 20-16 deficit. MIT used a 5-0 run to snag a 25-16 set win.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today marked the second all-time meeting between the two teams.
MATCH TWO: BRANDEIS 3, WENTWORTH 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Two kills by Ava Rocchio helped mark a 3-3 knot early in the first set before a Swanson finish chipped in to 7-6 edge for the Leopards later on. A pair of kills apiece for Sanders and Morford helped mark an 11-9 lead before another two by Sanders later pushed the advantage to 15-12. A kill by Swanson marked a 19-16 lead before another two finishes by Sanders stretched the lead at 22-20. However, the Judges fired off a 5-1 run in the late going, ultimately claiming themselves a come-from-behind 25-23 set win.
- Brandeis got off to a 4-1 start in the second stanza before two kills by Swanson later in the frame marked a 7-6 deficit. The Judges pulled away with a 14-10 lead before a kill apiece by Rocchio and Sanders helped later mark a 15-13 score. Brandeis continued to outpace Wentworth the rest of the way, securing ten of the next 19 points to hold on for a 25-22 set win.
- Two kills by Rocchio marked a 3-3 tie in the third frame before a trio of finishes by Megan Bachli helped Wentworth gain a 7-6 edge. Kills by Swanson, Morford, and Bachli paved the way to the Leopards grabbing hold of a 13-8 advantage before Brandeis rallied, scoring 13 straight points to take a 21-13 lead. The Judges outpaced the Leopards the rest of the way to earn a 25-17 set win.
