Men’s Lacrosse Comes Up Short at Roger Williams in CNE First Round
The Leopards staged a late comeback but fell just short, 11-10, as the season comes to an end
BRISTOL, R.I. – The #5 Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team fell in a tight battle against the #4 Roger Williams Hawks in the first round of the Conference of New England Tournament. The Hawks move on with a narrow 11-10 win on Saturday night. Gabe Cobham tallied three goals while Tyler Longo added two goals and two assists. Jake Caraluzzi scored one goal to go with two assists, and AJ Smith made nine saves in the cage for Wentworth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Caraluzzi scored an unassisted goal to put the Leopards in front early in the first quarter. The Hawks answered to tie the game before Cobham's tally restored Wentworth's lead.
- Roger Williams rattled off five goals in the final 7:56 of the first quarter to take a 6-2 lead into the second frame.
- Cobham got the Leopards going in the second, scoring his second goal just over a minute into the quarter. After a goal from Caleb McKeown made it 7-3 to the hosts, Wentworth came storming back.
- Longo added an unassisted tally before Cobham finished a pass from Caraluzzi to make it 7-5 game. Longo scored another unassisted goal to make it 7-6 but the Hawks answered with two goals in the final three minutes to lead 9-6 at the half.
- Connor Russel pushed the hosts' lead to 10-6 early in the third quarter. Tony Corrado got on the board, scoring on a pass from Longo to bring the Leopards within three heading into the fourth quarter.
- Wentworth came out strong in the fourth quarter with Colin Ocampo getting an early goal to make it 10-8. Caraluzzi scored to cut the deficit to one before Boden Landers scored with 3:46 to tie the game 10-10.
- Roger Williams responded 42 seconds later with Brady Lee scoring an unassisted goal to put the Hawks in front 11-10. The hosts held on, fighting off the late surge from the Leopards, to advance in the tournament.
