Women’s Volleyball Sweeps UNE for Fifth Consecutive Win

The Leopards earn their third sweep in the last four games; improve to 16-4 on the season

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team extended its win streak to five games with a sweep of University of New England on Wednesday night. Emma Sanders tallied 14 kills to lead the way while Olivia Vaughn recorded 29 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Leopards and Nor'easters exchanged points to begin set one with the game tied at 6-6 early. Wentworth went on a 14-5 run behind three kills from Emma Sanders to take a commanding 20-11 lead. The Nor'easters cut the lead to six but back-to-back kills from Sanders and Clairissa Taylor gave the Leopards the 25-14 win in the first frame.
  • Wentworth opened the second set with a 4-0 run which was answered by the hosts, who had a 10-5 run of their own to take the lead. Sanders scored two straight aces to put the Leopards back in front, setting up a back-and-forth finish to the second set. The teams exchanged points with three kills from UNE's Kailyn Reilly leveling the score at 20-20. Kinsey Lutz's kill and a service error gave Wentworth the narrow 25-23 win in the second set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Hannah Nowell's kill and an attack error put the Nor'easters up 2-0 before 9-2 run from Wentworth forced the hosts into a timeout. Out of the break, the Leopards put together an 8-3 run with four players tallying a kill to extend the lead to 17-7, forcing another timeout from UNE. Kailyn Reilly and Kelsey Bradshaw combined for three straight points as the Nor'easters made it a seven-point game, but bad set and an attack error gave Wentworth the 25-16 win in the final set and secured the sweep for the Leopards.  
  • Sanders' 14 kills were a game high. Amanda Zweifler led the Leopards with 22 digs while Sanders and Vaughn had 13 and 12 digs, respectively.  

THE SERIES:

  • Tonight was the 33rd all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth has won the last 10 matchups.
